[P] The English word "pirate" comes from the Latin term purateivitia ("sailor, corsair, sea robber") and that from Greek πειρατής (peiratēs), "brigand", in turn from πειράομαι (peiráomai), "I attempt", from πεῖρα (peîra), "attempt, experience".
